pastor from chicago, reverend jeremiah wright. steve smith was part of the strategic team in 2008 when they decided that they would not attack barack obama based on his pastor. but this is a different year and it is telling that the right thinks what will unravel the presidency of barack obama and make him a one-term president, the thing that will make people vote for mitt romney is not something from the obama presidency but rather something secret from barack obama's past. something secret people didn't know about him before. if they only knew this about him, his reelection would be impossible. that's the one side of this bomb shell tape. from the other side, this year's bomb shell tapes of paul ryan and mitt romney have not been about some secret past for these men. unless you count paul ryan pledging his allegiance back in 2 2005. the tape that's made a big impact against the republican side this year has been tape of things that paul ryan and mitt romney have been saying within the past year. specifically when they are talking to conservative audiences. so two weeks ago, david cor
-mitt romney super pac had even been pitched the idea of bringing jeremiah wright back as an attack on president obama. that ad campaign was never picked up by the pro-romney super pac or the romney campaign itself. it was a scandal they had even been asked to pick up something that racially charged. but a few months later, the campaign picked up the welfare nonsense campaigning in a way that's divorced from the facts but that's loaded with enough sub text to knock you over in a still wind. and they picked up newt gingrich surrogate in his food stamps attack. no and now fox news and the pro-mitt romney drudge report just are going full bore on the jeremiah wright stuff, as o of right now. in 2008 the john mccain had a choice about whether or not they should campaign on really overtly racial appeals. things like the jeremiah wright attack. they chose not to in 2008. if the romney campaign is going to keep going there along with the the conservative media, can it work this year? would it have worked in 2008? what are the lessons from john mccain having not gone there in 2008 when he h
pastor jeremiah wright. >> the video in its entirety is about 40 minutes long. in the clip we are about to show you the now president obama is speaking about hurricane katrina and claims the victims of that storm were ignored by the government but the circumstance was different for 9-11. >> down in new orleans where they still have not rebuilt 20 months later there is a federal law when you get reconstruction money from the federal government called the stanford act. basically it says, when you get federal money you have got to give a 10 percent match. the local government has to come up with 10 percent. here's the facts. when 9-11 happened in new york city, they waived the stafford act, said this is too serious a problem, we can't expect new york city to rebuild on test own. forget the dollar you have to put in. that's the right thing to do. what's happening in new orleans? where is your dollar? where is your stafford act money? makes no sense. tells me the bullet hasn't been taken out. tells me somehow the people down in new orleans they don't care about as much. >> as we mentioned ea
jeremiah wright who was the obamas' pastor in chicago and became a lightning rod in the 2008 campaign when it was revealed he said the u.s. brought the 9/11 attacks upon itself among other comments. at this event then-senator obama expressed pride in reverend wright. >> i've got to give a special shout out to my pastor, the guy who puts up with me, counsels me, listens to my wife complain about me -- [laughter] he's a friend and a great leader. >> reporter: the obama campaign calls this 2007 video a distraction and is accusing allies of mitt romney of recirculating clips of a 2007 event that was open to the press. >> desperate attempt to change the subject from a video in which mitt romney wrote off half of the american people are circulating a video that was covered by the campaign press corps at that time. >> reporter: the speech was june 2007, more than six months before the iowa caucuses. at that point be then-senator obama was considered a long shot, now it's getting some attention. megyn? megyn: mike emanuel, thank you. so what impact, if any, will this video have on the campaign? ch
minute video wass shot in june of 2007 at reverend jeremiah wright was in the audience.he's thee president's former everenn who came under fire during the 2008 presidentiil campaign for his raciaaly chargee sermons. phere's a new head of f-b-i operattons in baltimore. stephen vvgg has bben nammd as the new leader of the city's f-b-i field offiie.vogt started with the agency in 19- 89.his most recent assignment was in afghanistan. 3 the orioles got dominated by tampa bay's pitcher last night.... but still managed to pull out a viccory in the second to last game of he seas. seasoo. but the red sox could not beat the yankees, so new york keeps a one game lead in the american league east ponight. last night this waa - the only istake rays pitcher &pstruck out 15 rioles, but no chhis davii here.. ddvis ties an orioles reccrd with again to jim johnson going or - the ave. and he gets thh groundout to win the game. the yankees retain a one game lead over the o's with one gameeto play for each team. thh o's must win tonight and hope the yankees lose to force a one g
's interesting. remember later on, they did, president obama did distance himself from jeremiah wright. barely knew him. then he was giving him accolades in speech in front of everybody. if you are uneasy about president obama, this supports that and if you're on the fence maybe it makes you nervous. >> bob: this speech was given after he disowned reverend wright? oh, before. so what is wrong with that? >> eric: he had a look back and said i didn't -- i sat in pew for 20 years. it didn't listen. if you listen to what he said in the speech, friend, great educator, learned a lot. listened to my wife. listen to my wife complain about me. >> bob: has he said g.d. america at that point, do you know? >> eric: reverend wright? yeah. >> bob: said it by that time? >> eric: 2001. >> bob: are you sure? >> eric: i think, i'm pretty sure he was wit buddies with farrakhan at that point. >> bob: i don't think a single information that he saw farrakhan. let alone was buddies. but then again he was a friend of every terrorist bomber in 1960. >> greg: bill ayers. >> i'm not talking about -- >> greg: you don't n
, if there was a moment the whole jeremiah wright association and all this racial stuff that's there, if there was a moment that that was going to hurt and sink barack obama politically, it was april of 2008. there was a serious crisis in barack obama's campaign. he delivered a speech on race, a speech to be remembered for years to come and that put the issue to rest for 70%, 80% of the public. but there's this sliver of the public on the right still living in april of 200. it's a real problem for the republican party. when you're a month away from the election and your candidate is losing and this is what you're counting on as the big bombshell, you're out of touch with where the rest of the country is. >> right. jimmy, republicans don't have a lot going for them right now, but they seized on a recent comment by joe biden, who else, who said the middle class has been buried. i wonder if they've overestimated the importance of this statement. take a listen. >> those happens to be the words of the distinguished vice president of the united states, mr. joe biden. no, don't boo. he's th
consider how much focus was placed on reverend jeremiah wright four years ago. i've been a bit surprised the press has been hesitant to talk about things like proxy baptisms. as you know, mitt romney's father-in-law, ann romney's father was a devout atheist. after his death, mitt romney himself performed the posthumous baptism making him a mormon. we've heard a lot about this in the past year. one mormon church baptized anne frank despite the church's promise to not proxy baptize holocaust victims. are you a bit surprised things like that haven't gotten more scrutiny in the press given the attention that was paid to jeremiah wright a few years ago? >> i think back in february, i think it was, there was kind of a lot of scrutiny on proxy baptisms because it came out that like you said, holocaust victims had been getting baptized. and i think that there was even a case where -- i can't remember -- somebody was baptized -- one prominent figure was baptized who wasn't even dead it turned out. proxy baptism for someone
his former pastor, the reverend jeremiah wright. did it make you feel squeamish? what did you think when all of a sudden we're hearing about reverend wright? >> no. look. that's an issue that was litigated and talked about very specifically for a good period of time during the '08 cycle. so i think the american people have made up their minds of who president obama is, what kind of ideas he has about what our country is and where he wants to take it. so i don't think that people will want to relitigate that. the notion that mitt romney's campaign had nothing to do with this i find lacking credibility. when you consider the closeness that matt drudge has to the romney campaign, it's hard to imagine a scenario where there was not some sort of conversation or collusion or even the handoff of the video which is five years old to matt drudge knowing that many people in the media would be led around by matt drudge and cover something they'd already covered five years ago. >> just to be precise, the daily caller website is the one that posted the video, that's tucker carlson's website. it
to this issue that we went through four years ago in the 2008 campaign about reverend jeremiah wright from trinity church in chicago, and here's the penalty now this is before the videos came out this is before the videos came out. the president hadn't seen the videos. how would you talk about your pastor? he was being very complimentary. the republicans are trying to take us back to where we were in 2008, which is just ridiculous. we hashed this out. the guy's been president for four years he has a record to run on. you want to criticize the record, go ahead. but to take us back to this controversy, peter this is just ridiculous. >> i was tuning in and i had a thought, back in the last election we heard rumors that there was the infamous whitey tape that either barack obama or michelle obama was on tape for saying whitey. for half a second i go oh, my gosh, this is the whitey tape and i started watching it and i thought this is it, this is what they've got? we fought this before. >> i don't think anybody's used that word since george jefferson in the early 1980's. [ laughter ] >> welcome
of radicalism in his speech about jeremiah wright. if you look carefully at that speech. it is different than martin luther king jr.'s take on rice in america. barack obama never mentions abraham lincoln and never created all men -- all men are created equal. those are absent from the speech. >> it is a deplate point and you look at the great society now people look at welfare and entitlement system and how had the great society fail . and failed to provide the safety net and are we in a nation where we are experience 50-50 environment. >> that's right. >> half of the country is supporting the other half of the country. is that who we want to be? >> liberalism had an impatience and hostility to the american congressional system, the olderaxoms and principles of the american public. that is a polar working its way out. we are seeing living hosstillity with the constitution and still the legal constitution. it is hard to bridge a gap that is a century old and has been certainly for the past generation deepening. >> which way are we going. i think conservatives is the horse to bet on in the long
on the reverend jeremiah wright who himself made numerous racially incendiary speeches. any fallout from that or is that old news too? >> clearly obviously the campaign is going to suggest that it's old news and, you know, what he said there, and also the tone in which he speaks and the cadence and his accent and everything is clearly something very different from what ever hear out of the rose garden or anything like that. also words he has about reverend wright are exact opposite what says a year later when he denounces the church and leaves his church there. gregg: right. >> i think that it's that sort of disonance what we hear one place and what we hear in another, way he speaks in one place and speak in another, that could be very disconcert fog are a lot of people who got behind him because he was not going to sort of be this divisive figure. gregg: now, charlie, there's another clip. this is from yesterday and this is vice president joe biden, and he basically admits in front of this audience and television cameras that the middle class has been buried under the last four years. o
